Her phone beeped. She picked it up from the worktop, her heart giving a flip when she saw who it was. It was no good, she’d have to reply. A holding message that would keep them happy until the baby arrived, then she’d be able to get her mind round the situation and decide how to sort it. Quite how she was going to do that she had no idea, but her current situation meant it was probably a good idea to keep her options open.

She started typing, keeping as close to the truth as was feasible:

I’m so sorry I haven’t replied. Connection has been rubbish out here. Had a car crash, and I’m a bit the worse for wear I’m afraid. So that’s delayed my plans until I’m fit to travel. Hope you’re doing well. Speak soon. Love Em x
